War In the Pacific America the Beautiful Quarter

Five new strikes will be created in 2019 under the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program, the third of which will be the 2019 War In the Pacific America the Beautiful Quarter. It will be the forty-eighth coin minted under the program which started in 2010 and will include 56 new quarter dollars once it is completed in 2021.

Design candidates for the War In the Pacific quarter dollar should appear in early 2018. At this time, they will be reviewed and commented on by the Citizen’s Coinage Advisory Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts. The Mint will take these comments (along with comments from others) and give them to the Treasury Secretary who will make the final decision. His choice will probably appear in the first part of 2019 when all five quarter dollar designs for the year will be unveiled.

As the third quarter dollar strike minted in 2019, it will be preceded by a coin honoring Lowell National Historical Park in Massachusetts and one for the American Memorial Park in the Northern Mariana Islands. Following it will be two coins including a coin showcasing the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in Texas and one showcasing the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho.

War In the Pacific National Historical Park of Guam

Honoring the bravery and sacrifices of all who participated in the Pacific Theater of World War II, the War In the Pacific National Historical Park is located in several locations on the island of Guam.

Guam itself was captured by Japanese forces in 1941 and would not be liberated until 1944 when American forces invaded. The Memorial Wall at Asan Bay Overlook contains the names of over 16,000 Americans and Chamorro (indigenous peoples) who suffered or died during the war on Guam.

While the park itself is a reminder of a horrific chapter in world history, the pristine beaches and turquoise waters return a sense of peace to all who visit.

With part of the coast of the island located within park boundaries, individuals may be interested to know that one of the most diverse coral reefs may be found within its jurisdiction.

Visitors may want to stop by the former Army Reserve Center in Sumay which now hosts a contact facility for the National Historical Park.
