Everglades National Park Quarter

Closing out the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program for the year 2014 will be the 2014 Everglades National Park Quarter featuring Everglades National Park in Florida. It will also be the 25th strike created for the 11-year program which will encompass a total of 56 new quarters throughout its life.

As the last quarter to be issued that year, it will most likely only enter into circulation in the fall or early winter of 2014. Its final design should be released by the Mint in the early part of the year along with the final designs for the other 2014 quarters. Design candidates will be reviewed and released to the public in 2013 to allow time for the appropriate organizations and individuals to provide commentary.

When issued, the Mint will also make the coins available for sale directly to the public in both bags and two-roll sets if it follows procedure established for strikes of previous years.

Additional 2014 America the Beautiful Quarter releases for the year include:

Everglades National Park in Florida

Encompassing the southern quarter of the everglades marshland in Florida, the park is touted as the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. The park is also the third largest in the continental United States at 1.5 million acres. Different from most national parks, Everglades was created to protect a fragile ecosystem rather than a geological feature.

Unknown to most, the everglades is actually a slow-moving system of rivers traveling at speeds well under 1 mile per day. As such, it makes an ideal habitat for hundreds of species of birds, fishes, mammals and over 50 species of reptiles including alligators and American crocodiles.

Four species of venomous snakes can be found in the waters of the Everglades including the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the dusky pigmy rattlesnake, the cottonmouth snake and the coral snake. However, along with the other dangerous creatures of the region like the alligators, most tend to shy away from people and very few attacks are ever recorded.

The most pleasant time of year to visit the Everglades is from December through April when the average highs reach in the 70′s and lows in the 50′s. Summertime is hot and humid and the rainy season runs from June through October.
